Edo State Government Condemns Uromi Killings, Blames Opposition for Propelling Insecurity

AMS – The Edo State government has vehemently condemned the wanton lynching of 16 Nigerians in Uromi by a mob, who allegedly found them in possession of firearms and vowed to prosecute the perpetrators for resorting to extra-judicial measures. This horrific trend of coordinated insecurity across the state is an offshoot of the previous PDP-led government, which has been brazenly embroiled, even deploying sponsored thugs to destabilise the state.

Nevertheless, His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, has given a marching order to security operatives with a clear directive to clamp down on all criminal groups in Edo State. In a bold move to remove the remaining saboteurs within the security establishment, he has suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP. Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), on a pending full investigation of this glaring security failure.

It has been confirmed that the vigilante squad that perpetrated the Uromi massacre had never been officially profiled or registered in the state security apparatus, and this has raised suspicion of external manipulation by the enemies of the government, who have vowed to bring the government of Okpebholo to its knees. These marauding forces, aided by some individuals linked to the previous administration, have always sought to destabilise peace in the state.

It is on record that during the campaign, thugs allegedly linked to the PDP made repeated attempts to assassinate Gov. Okpebholo. In one such attack, a police officer assigned to him was killed. Also, during the gubernatorial campaign period, PDP-biased agitators continuously disrupted Okpebholo’s campaign trail with violent confrontations across the state. During this turbulent period, there was no report indicating that the APC threw knockouts into opposition rallies. It is also on record that some PDP stalwarts and social media urchins have repeatedly submitted that this administration will never experience peace. Efforts are underway to start making those violent instigators accountable for the conflagration they are wittingly and unwittingly instigating.

Meanwhile, 14 suspects connected with the recent killings have already been arrested by the police, and another special police force commissioned by the Inspector General of Police has gone out to fish out the remaining culprits. The government of Okpebholo is determined that the perpetrators of the heinous crime face the full wrath of the law.

Governor Okpebholo sent personal condolences to the families of the victims and also met with the Kano State government since most of the victims were from Kano. He assures the Edo people that his administration is committed to dismantling the purveyor of violence bequeathed upon the state by the PDP and establishing enduring peace in the state.
