Edo Govt Backs Higher Education Growth at Edo State University Convocation

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has reiterated its unwavering commitment to advancing higher education during the 7th Convocation Ceremony of Edo State University Iyamho.

In a goodwill message delivered at the ceremony, the governor represented by Special Adviser on Policy and Strategy Prof Philip Afaha commended the leadership of the institution for their remarkable strides in transforming the institution into a world-class center of learning.

 

He praised the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Victor Adetimirin, whose tenure, though relatively short, has been marked by impressive administrative competence and progressive reforms. His leadership was described as instrumental in sustaining the university’s upward trajectory. The contributions of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor were also acknowledged for laying the solid foundation upon which the institution continues to thrive.

Addressing parents and guardians, the governor expressed deep appreciation for their sacrifices in nurturing the graduates, describing them as the unsung heroes behind the students’ success. He encouraged them to remain actively involved in the lives of their wards as they transition into adulthood, emphasizing the importance of continued guidance in an increasingly complex world.

Highlighting the state’s broader vision, the government noted that Edo State is steadily emerging as a hub for academic excellence, with its state-owned universities playing a central role in expanding access to quality education. This aligns with the administration’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritizes education as a key driver of development. He urge the university to deepen collaboration with sister institutions to foster research innovation and academic exchange.

Reflecting on policy initiatives, the governor recalled its efforts over the past year to revitalize the state’s university system. These include clearing outstanding salary arrears owed to lecturers, increasing institutional funding, and investing in critical infrastructure development across campuses. At Edo State University Iyamho, several expansion projects have reached advanced stages of completion, underscoring the government’s commitment to creating a conducive learning environment.

The governor also called for collective support for national development initiatives, particularly the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The agenda, it noted, is aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth and development, with education as a central pillar.

Encouraging the graduating students, the governor congratulated them on their academic achievements and welcomed them into the ranks of Nigeria’s intellectual community. The graduates were encouraged to uphold the university’s core values of integrity, excellence, and a passion for knowledge as they embark on their professional journeys. They were also urged to remain connected to their alma mater and contribute meaningfully to its continued growth and development.

The governor reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing education and ensuring that Edo State University Iyamho continues to flourish as a leading institution in Nigeria.
